I recently had the honor of photographing a vow renewal for this beautiful family.
When Shelley & Dan first contacted me, I was so excited to hear that their ceremony would be held in their home. It felt so fitting that such a significant moment would happen within the walls they made their home, surrounded by the people they love most in the world.
Photographing vow renewals hits different. There is a distinct difference in the air. While first-time weddings are filled with the beautiful, nervous anticipation of a new beginning, a vow renewal carries the weight of all the history that comes with it. It isn't the first chapter of a book; it is the continuation of a story that has been written, page by page, for years or even decades.
When a couple stands together to renew their vows, they aren't just making a promise to each other, they are honoring a commitment they’ve already tested and proven to be true. They are acknowledging the storms they’ve weathered, the family they’ve built, and the beautiful chaos of the life they’ve navigated side-by-side. It's a powerful declaration that they will continue to conquer life together, knowing exactly what that commitment takes. It’s about loving each other through the routine, the surprises, and the quirks...and in Dan & Shelley's case it's loving your partner even when they decide to rearrange the furniture in the middle of the night!
Beyond the couple, a vow renewal is an incredible experience for their family. Witnessing your parents reaffirm a commitment made decades ago is a rare and beautiful gift. It shows, in real-time, that love is something that grows and changes as the years pass by. It teaches the next generation that true love is resilient, and perhaps most importantly, that love is worth celebrating.
Shelley and Dan also shared a piece of wisdom that I’ve been thinking about ever since: the importance of celebrating. They emphasized how important it is to celebrate the small wins and the quiet milestones, not just the big events. I took this to heart because, truthfully, I don't take enough time to celebrate the little things in my own life. I often let anniversaries pass by quietly.
Watching them celebrate their journey with such joy made me want to change that. Kevin and I have been married for 13 years now, and being part of Shelley and Dan's day sparked something in me. It made me realize that I would love nothing more than to renew our vows, too. We need to take the time to honor the history we share and celebrate the life we’ve built, just like this.
Thank you, Shelley and Dan, for allowing me to capture these memories for you; it was truly an honor to be a part of your day. And thank you for the gentle nudge I didn't know I needed. You’ve inspired me to stop letting life just pass by and to start celebrating my own family's milestones, no matter how small they might seem.
Congratulations on 35 beautiful years together!
